Consulting & Training Services
The following topics represent key areas of focus in my research and consulting work:
Explicit Instructional Pedagogy
Structured, systematic, and direct teaching practices that provide clear modelling and opportunities for scaffolded practice. This is an evidence-based approach to support pupils with special needs including those with learning difficulties.
Effective Vocabulary Instruction
Teaching that is intentional, contextualised, and repeated across multiple exposures. It includes both direct teaching of word meanings and strategies for word learning. Vocabulary instruction has shown to significantly enhance students' reading comprehension and expressive language.
Supporting Students with Reading Difficulties
Evidence-based methods that target all areas of reading such as decoding, fluency, comprehension, and writing.
Improving Reading Comprehension
Instructional strategies that emphasise the development of evidence-based comprehension strategies for inferencing, summarisation, and monitoring of understanding. These are often embedded in rich and meaningful texts.
Evidence-based Writing Instruction
Structured approaches that integrate text organisation, sentence construction, and the writing process (planning, drafting, revising). Emphasises explicit modelling, guided practice, and opportunities for meaningful writing across genre for primary and secondary school students.
Using Data to Guide Instruction
The ongoing use of formative assessment data to inform instructional planning, monitor student progress, and evaluate intervention effectiveness. Emphasises responsiveness to learner needs and accountability for outcomes.
